Four years ago I’m sitting in LA with some jewelry friends and one of them pulls out a small bag of spinels that he called Jedi spinels. Fun fact-Vincent Pardieu a well known gem dealer in the early 2000s named the bright reddish pink ones this because he said they “were untouched by the dark side” and yes they are named after Star Wars. I was told that they are really hard to set because one never knows which way to “attack” their octahedral shape if you don’t want to cut them. And why on earth would anyone want to cut them?!
So they sat for a couple of years. I can’t explain where ideas come from so don’t ask but the fully formed idea that these stones needed to be encased in egg shaped crystals and perform as a Lock and become a parure with matching earrings just occurred to me. I reached out to the incredible stone cutter Michael Peuster who agreed to take a shot at it and he spent the time to make it happen and we know it wasn’t easy. Michael is going to be very surprised I think to finally see what we have done with his work…. I chose platinum because I love the way it offset the spinels.
The chain is made of interlocking platinum “cans” with more spinels imbedded on either side. They spin. So they look different from every angle. It’s a parure which simply means it’s a set that is meant to be worn together but of course my hope is that you will wear all the pieces in many ways.
The earrings are convertible but you know that because to me it doesn’t make sense if things are not convertible. The “Egg Lock” detaches from the chain and can be worn of course in other ways. All of it. For a wild dreamer. For a Star Wars lover…. These types of pieces find their way to their people.
